The A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) is a drone qualification allowing a person to fly small unmanned aerial systems close to people. Under this regulation, a pilot may operate a drone commercially without needing to spend thousands of pounds on training and CAA Authorisations. It should be noted though that this also limits the ability to undertake more specialised drone work.

What are the course basics?

The A2 CofC requires the completion a theory course and to sit a monitored theory exam. This 30 multiple-choice question exam requires a 75% score to pass. Practical flight training can be self-trained or under an instructors supervision.

Is it expensive?

Being the most popular course it is a cost-effective route for the majority of new operators for both recreational and professional alike. There are varying costs, set by the individual training school so it is worth weighing up the pros and cons of when travelling long distance.

How long does the A2 CofC last?

Certification lasts for 5 years. The expiry date is shown on the A2 Certificate of Competency and is also available to the pilot by contacting their RAE training provider.
